    LITTER FREE SCHOOL ZONE

Schools in Pennsylvania can keep their school grounds litter free with Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful’s Litter Free School Zone Program. The program encourages hands-on activities to teach environmental stewardship and responsibility and can be combined with a lesson on how litter affects animals, people, water quality or economics.  Responsibilities include planning two improvement projects per school year and can include litter cleanups and beautification events, like creating and caring for pollinator and rain gardens. Supplies of gloves and vests are available. See how a student from York Adams Academy used the program for her senior project here.

Pick Up Pennsylvania is a year-long initiative, however, events scheduled from March 1 through May 31 are eligible to receive free trash bags, gloves, and safety vests provided by support from the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection, PennDOT, Ocean Conservancy and Keep America Beautiful, as supplies last. Tomorrow needs more technically skilled professionals. Middle School Educators are invited to attend this week long, paid, residential STEM camp at Pennsylvania College of Technology that aims to create an awareness of and exposure to realities of upcoming workforce needs and career entry points related to construction and manufacturing. The goal is to expand the knowledge of educators to include hands-on and STEM education in the middle school classroom. This project is funded by a PASmart Grant.

    • What: STEM Careers Re-Imagined: Middle School Educator Externship. For educators in the following counties: Bradford, Clinton, Lycoming, Montour, Northumberland, Potter, Snyder, Sullivan, Tioga, Union
    • Where: Pennsylvania College of Technology, Williamsport, PA
    • When: July 24-28, 2023
    • How much: Educators will be paid up to $2000 ($1,000 for attending camp, $1,000 for submitting a vetted and shared lesson plan)

The concepts of this camp are design and build. Educators will receive a mobile lab kit including a 3D printer, explore the new science standards, test 3D learning standards, learn how to bring hands-on learning to the classroom, and network with college faculty, industry partners, and other educators. After the camp, they will have access to an educator curated lesson bank, an equipment lending library, industry tours for students, and a student showcase.

Did you remember to spring ahead this morning?! We were researching the history of Daylight Savings Time (DST) this week and were surprised to learn that although the adoption of the current DST is just roughly 100 years old, similar practices were adopted by ancient civilizations thousands of years ago. To align daily routines with solar time, for instance, Roman water clocks featured several weights for the various months of the year.

DST in the United States was originally adopted to conserve energy and make better use of daylight. Today, DST can feel as though it was created for the sole purpose of disrupting the sleep/wake cycle. Learn more about the history of DST here!

In honor of the welcoming of longer, brighter, warmer days, we are offering 30% off our pre-recorded spring yoga classes as well as 30% off the beloved ChildLight baseball cap & all baby rompers! Click the images below and use the code SPRING30 at check-out.
